A few days of northwest wind have pushed plenty of bait in from the west side of the island, and the salmon have followed. A few days ago, a beautiful 51lb Chinook was released off Bird Rock One, and you’d better believe we’re all eager to get back out there to find his bigger brother.

Inshore Chinook fishing has been fair for numbers, you can expect a solid 5–6 bites a day, but as is typical for August, the quality is there when they do come. Coho salmon have been a bit of a puzzle this season, with some days where you can’t find them at all and others where you can’t keep them off the line. My tip? Head offshore to the 200-foot line, troll parallel to shore for a good 40 minutes, and if you strike out, no worries, try again tomorrow.
For Chinook, Green Point, Bird Rock One, and Bird Rock Two remain productive favorites. For Halibut, Haliwood and the Pinnacles continue to deliver. Weather-wise, we’re seeing the usual August mix of fog and rain, with the sun stubbornly breaking through.

August in Haida Gwaii is always electric, and this year is no exception. The trick is to push through the slow periods and keep those rods wet at your favorite spot. Eventually, the bites will come and who knows? You might be the next member of the 50lbs Club!
Tight lines!
