I have been fishing in Haida Gwaii for 11 summers and every morning as I push my throttle down and we take off on our way to the grounds, I still feel the same sense of unknown and excitement that I did my first year. After hundreds of days on the water I know that at some point, every day, something special and memorable is going to happen. Whether that’s a fish of a lifetime, an unforgettable wildlife spectacle, or a sunrise over a misty point that makes you pause. The islands never fail to deliver.
We’ve been seeing a really encouraging number of healthy salmon so far this season. After so many seasons spent making memories on these amazing waters, I often hear the familiar phrase “remember how good it used to be?”. And it’s true – There was a time, not long ago, when salmon were even more plentiful and bigger too. While the fishing is still world class, it’s a good reminder of how important it is for all of us (fishermen, guides and anyone who loves the resource) to work together to protect it. If we can do this, I believe the “good old days” are still ahead of us.
Long may the Tyees run!
