Some fishing trips are good, and some become the stories you tell for the rest of your life. Our adventure the other day was definitely the latter.
The first morning greeted us with glassy, flat-calm seas that stretched to the horizon. The ocean looked more like polished blue steel than open water, and before long our rods were bending with bright, hard-fighting Coho salmon. Fish after fish came over the rail until we had lost count of the smiles and the laughter.

Then came the fish of a lifetime.
The reel screamed as a massive Chinook tore line from the spool. After a long, determined battle, a magnificent Tyee salmon finally surfaced beside the boat, its broad shoulders and gleaming silver sides shining in the morning sun. Everyone fell silent for a moment, taking in the size and beauty of the fish before cheers erupted across the deck.
As if that weren’t enough, we headed for deeper water where the action somehow became even better. One after another, hefty lingcod hammered our jigs until we reached our limit. Huge halibut followed, each one testing our strength before sliding into the net. Colorful rockfish completed the day’s catch, giving us a full limit that seemed almost too good to be true.
All around us, nature put on its own spectacular show. Humpback whales breached repeatedly in the distance, their enormous bodies launching clear out of the water before crashing back into the sea with thunderous splashes. Against the calm ocean and endless sky, it felt like we had front-row seats to one of the greatest wildlife displays on Earth.
As we cruised back to the Lodge with coolers full of fish and cameras full of memories, the setting sun painted the Haida Gwaii coastline in shades of gold and crimson. We all agreed that days like this can’t be planned—they’re simply gifts from the ocean.
It was the kind of fishing trip that every angler dreams about: endless Coho action, a trophy Tyee salmon, full limits of lingcod, halibut, and rockfish, humpback whales breaching all around us, and seas so calm they looked like a mirror. It was, without question, a perfect day at QCL in Haida Gwaii.
