Trip 10 is in the books, and fishing on northern Graham Island in Haida Gwaii has been delivering exactly what you’d hope for this time of year. Anglers are enjoying quality Chinook fishing, and last trip one fortunate guest had the chance to release a beautiful Tyee salmon.
Powerful Chinooks kept rods bending throughout the day as boats spread out across the fishing grounds. Those who spent some time working the deeper water were rewarded with quality lingcod and halibut, proving once again that a little persistence can go a long way. Coho fishing is still on the quiet side, but a handful have started to show up, and we’re optimistic that stronger numbers aren’t far behind.
Guests were rewarded with opportunities to target multiple species in one of British Columbia’s premier saltwater fisheries. The successful catch-and-release of a magnificent Tyee last trip underscored QCL’s commitment to salmon conservation through the Tyee Release Club program, helping ensure these exceptional fish continue their migration through the rich waters surrounding Haida Gwaii.
The wildlife has been putting on a show as well. We welcomed our first pod of orcas last week, and another group was spotted offshore today. Humpback whales have been making regular appearances, bald eagles remain a constant presence overhead, and a small black bear has become somewhat of a local celebrity, regularly wandering the beach near the harbour mouth.
We’re looking forward to seeing what the coming weeks bring as the season continues to build.
Tight Lines,
QCL Guide, Tommy G
